What is Pilates?
Pilates is a method of movement designed to build strength, improve control, and create a deeper connection between the mind and body. Through intentional, controlled movements, Pilates focuses on developing strength from the inside out while improving posture, balance, flexibility, and overall body awareness.
Where It Began

Pilates was developed by Joseph H. Pilates, but it wasn't originally called Pilates.
Joseph Pilates named his method Contrology, a name that reflected his belief in the importance of control and intention throughout movement. His approach was centered around the idea that physical fitness is not something that can simply be purchased or wished for, but something developed through consistent practice.
In his book Return to Life Through Contrology, Joseph Pilates wrote:
“Physical fitness can neither be acquired by wishful thinking nor by outright purchase. However, it can be gained through performing the daily exercises conceived for this purpose…”
The Method
At its core, Pilates is about how you move, not simply how much you move.
The method emphasizes control, precision, concentration, breath, and flow. Rather than rushing through repetitions, Pilates asks you to slow down, connect with your body, and perform each movement with purpose.
This intentional approach allows you to build strength while developing greater awareness of how your body moves.
